Kalaripayattu is made from two words ‘Kalahari’ and ‘Payattu’. Kalari means fighting ground or battlefield and Payat means method or art.
Many martial arts have been forgotten by people with time, but this art is still gaining popularity. In Kerala, this is customary, that if children’s reaches to the age of seven he has to learn and gain training of Kalaripayattu. The person who teaches this martial art is called ‘Guru’ and this is taught in schools called ‘Gurukula’.
Many people believe that the techniques were learnt by the hunters in the forest by watching the animals, which means many techniques in this martial art are learnt from animals.
